Custom Private Wealth Management Courses

Wealth Strategist partners provides custom wealth management education to meet the specific needs and interests of individual families or small groups of families.

We spend time with family members before the course to get to know them, to learn about the family structure and to understand the specific challenges they face. This helps us to customize content and emphasize a context that is specific and relevant to the client family. Our action-oriented courses help family members to continue the learning, discussion and progress well after the course is completed.

Customized private courses create opportunities to:

  • gain feedback from family members through anonymous surveys and small group discussions,
  • develop consensus about key strategic issues for family wealth management,
  • focus content to meet specialized educational or coaching requirements, and
  • agree on action steps and the people/parties responsible for completing them.

Consulting and customized education programs for private wealth management

  1. Recently having sold their stake in a global company, a first generation father and his adult children wanted to:
    • understand their options for managing financial assets effectively,
    • develop consensus on what they wanted to accomplish with their wealth, and how they could work together, and
    • structure their family office and learn how to work effectively together.
Wealth Strategist Partners developed a customized three-day course for the family
and organized a “tour” of different types of wealth management firms, custodians and consultants, demonstrating the wide range of options available and the trade-offs associated with each. Subsequently, we coached the family through a process to choose providers to fulfill their objectives.
  2. Having sold their family business several years before,

the extended family members were struggling to effectively manage the proceeds they had individually received. Many family members felt ill-equipped to evaluate their financial managers and all were concerned that they were over-paying for under-performance--yet they each valued their privacy and independence when it came to investment decisions.

Wealth Strategist Partners developed a four-day customized course for family members. In advance of the course, the family members completed a confidential survey we designed with them. The course, in addition to providing basic investment education, structured and encouraged discussion among family members around such issues as:

    • Should the family consider establishing a family office function to coordinate and organize the wealth management activities of individual family members?
    • How can the family support and encourage qualified young adult family members to become successful entrepreneurs, stewards of wealth, and public servants in their own right?
    • Having sold the business, how can they create a new “heart” of which they can be proud?
    • What new financial, business, and philanthropic opportunities have arisen as a result of the sale of the business, and how should the family capitalize on these?
  3. Lawyers, acting as trustees for family trusts, wanted additional independent education about wealth management. They wanted additional perspective on:
    • how the investment and wealth management industries operate
    • the trade-offs between indexing and active management,
    • the issues and challenges of financial infrastructure and reporting, and
    • the relationship between asset growth and cash flow management over the long term.

Wealth Strategist Partners prepared a “short course” on the structure of the investment and wealth management industries. We helped them develop an investment policy for the assets under their control that is consistent with the trust documents, and designed a performance system to hold the trusts' investment managers accountable. We continue to advise the trustees as they build out their investment infrastructure with their advisors.
